Certification of Food Handler Requirements

Certification of Food Handler Requirements Rule Rev. 11/13  The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Rule 410 IAC 7-22, Certification of Food Handler Requirements certification requirement took effect January 1, 2005. The rule incorporates much of the language in IC 16-42-5.2 with a few additions for clarity.  The rule is examination-based and does not include a training requirement as part of the rule. Many potential certified food handlers (managers) will be seeking out this information. Note: Rule 410 IAC 7-22 requires passing the proctored Food Manager Certification exam.  The online Food Handler Certificate does not meet Indiana requirements.  Local Health Departments (LDHs) may no longer require county certifications in addition or as a substitute for Rule 410 IAC 7-22.  Note to Certified Food Handlers: Original or photocopied documents must be presented during inspections and the Certified Food Handler must present proof of identity if requested by an inspector.  To replace a lost Food Handler Certificate, contact the accredited organization through which you originally received your certificate. The ISDH does not retain copies of individual records.  A person designated as the certified food handler for a food establishment must not allow their certification to expire.
