Tobacco Retail Enforcement

Enforcement of tobacco laws can deter violators and sends a message that community leaders believe these policies are important for protecting Indiana's youth. Enforcement of Indiana's tobacco laws deters youth from trying to obtain tobacco products and retailers from illegally selling tobacco products to minors.

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act became law in June 2009. It gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate the manufacturing distribution and marketing of tobacco products to protect public health.

Indiana's Efforts

The Indiana Tobacco Retailer Inspection Program (TRIP) is a state government program designed to systematically monitor the effectiveness of tobacco retail compliance.

Indiana's tobacco retailer compliance laws restrict the sales and distribution of tobacco products to minors. These laws are found in the Indiana Code at IC 35-46-1-10, IC 35-46-1-11, and IC 35-46-1-11.7.

To report a violation of Indiana's tobacco laws by tobacco retailers and vendors, please contact the Indiana State Excise Police District office in your area.
Contact information for these offices can be found here: http://www.in.gov/atc/isep/2379.htm
